Robotics and Automation science and engineering is the discipline studying and developing systems able to generate and control movements and forces.

Robotics focuses on systems incorporating sensors and actuators that operate autonomously or semi-autonomously in cooperation with humans. Artificial intelligence research emphasizes intelligence and adaptability to cope with unstructured environments.

Automation focuses on systems that operate autonomously, usually in structured environments over extended periods, and on the specific structuring of such environments. Automation research emphasizes efficiency, productivity, quality, and reliability.

Both robotics and Automation involve designing intelligent machines and systems that are utilized in manufacturing and service industries, health care services including surgery and rehabilitation, laboratory automation, agriculture, space and underwater exploration, entertainment and many other applications to assist and support humans or their well-being.

Automation vs. robots: Automation includes Machinery designed to carry out a specific task, Bottling machine, Dishwasher, Paint sprayer and Robots includes machinery designed to carry out a variety of tasks, Pick and place arms, Mobile robots, Computer Numerical Control machines.

Types of robots:

  • Pick and place:  Moves items from one point to another  does not need to follow a specific path between points  Uses include loading and unloading machines, placing components on circuit boards, and moving parts off conveyor belts.
  • Moves items between points
  • Moves along a programmable path
  • Continuous path control:  Moves along a specific path  Uses include welding, cutting, machinery parts.
  • Sensory:  Uses sensors for feedback.  Closed-loop robots use sensors in conjunction with actuators to gain higher accuracy – servo motors.  Uses include mobile robotics, telepresence, search and rescue, pick and place with machine vision.
  • Employs sensors for feedback

Why Use Embedded System?

Embedded Systems has witnessed tremendous growth in the last one decade.

Software for embedded applications, which includes real-time operating systems and portable operating systems, will see the second highest growth. Market heavyweights Microsoft and Sun have entered the embedded systems marketplace, their Windows CE and Java offerings, respectively. Embedded processors, the largest segment in terms of revenue, will grow at 11.2% on average per year.

The market will be led, in terms of growth, by embedded memory products. Almost all the fast developing sectors like automobile, aeronautics, space, rail, mobile communications, and electronic payment solutions have witnessed increased use of embedded technologies. What is Embedded System?

  • An Embedded System is a computer system designed for specific control functions within a larger system. It is embedded as part of a complete device often including hardware and mechanical parts. Embedded systems control many devices in common use today, namely Mobile Phones, Automobiles, Air-crafts, Computers, etc.
